The birthday centennial of “The First Lady of Song” takes place in 2017, and SRJO is pulling out all the stops to celebrate the life and artistry of Ella Fitzgerald, whose voice has thrilled audiences around the globe and remains the standard by which all jazz singers are measured.
Award-winning vocalist CARMEN BRADFORD joins SRJO to honor the memory of Ella Fitzgerald. Carmen met Ms. Fitzgerald many times as a child, and the two singers shared many special moments backstage during tours with Count Basie and his Orchestra. Ella expressed joy over Carmen’s second CD recording (“With Respect”), especially enjoying Carmen’s rendition of the hit tune “Mr. Paganini,” a mainstay of Ella’s early repertoire.
Returning to Seattle after her resounding 2015 performance with SRJO, Carmen brings all of this history here for one of the first events in what is certainly to be a worldwide celebration of Ella’s centennial birthday.
This concert will feature favorite hits as recorded by Ella, including “A Tisket A Tasket” (sung with the Chick Web Orchestra), “I Got It Bad and That Ain’t Good” (sung with the Ellington Orchestra) and “Honey Suckle Rose” (sung with the Basie Orchestra).
