Figures of Speech is a feature-length documentary that follows a group of high school students from all over the country as they vie for glory in the little-known world of competitive acting, otherwise known as Speech or Forensics. It is a coming-of-age story wrapped inside a quirky sub-culture competition doc, that will remind you what it feels like to be on the edge of adulthood, fighting to become whoever it is you’re meant to be.
A love-letter from producers Sami Kreigstein and Erica Dasher to Speech, a nerdy extracurricular activity that fundamentally changed both their lives. The two met at Speech and Debate camp as 13 year olds; competed together through high school (both final-ing at Nationals and winning the Harvard 2/9National Tournament in their respective events); coached after they graduated; and when they got to college decided that someone had to tell this story. They took a year off of college, cobbled the funds together from friends and family, and shot over 400 hours of footage, chipping away at it until what was left was a portrait of eight incredible kids, dealing with issues from sexual identity, to race and gender, parental pressure, and even falling in love.
