CITY OPERA BALLET opens Spring 2017 with Ballet Bellevue in the company's first reprise of Jennifer L. Porter's Firebird
at The Theatre at Meydenbauer Center March 24-26, 2017 with Orchestra Bellevue performing Stravinsky's famous and much-loved score under the baton of Music Director/Conductor Philip Tschopp.
Tyranny, Subjugation, Addiction and ultimately Hope are some of the themes explored in Firebird
by Porter's contemporary take on this (neo) classical ballet dating back to the era of Diaghilev's Ballet Russes. The story is of Ivan, a man who innocently stumbles into a world of evil and corruption that is ruled by a cruel leader through trickery and intimidation. In the struggle to navigate his way through this ugly place, Ivan's fate allows an encounter with the Firebird
, a beautiful, magical creature that he is drawn first to pursue and capture, but then set free, unaware that she would later rescue him from having become part of the darkness and evil of his environment.
