Daniel Handler, the bestselling author behind the hugely popular Lemony Snicket books, as well as many titles under his own name, will deliver the keynote address at the 24th annual Literary Lions Gala. This premier fundraising event for the King County Library System (KCLS) Foundation raises money to support literacy and learning programs at the library system's 49 libraries. Nancy Pearl, renowned book expert and literary speaker, will once again emcee the event. Handler's newest novel for adults is We Are Pirates, which has been described as "a nightmarish mating experiment between Joseph Heller and Captain Jack Sparrow." Handler is also the author of the novels The Basic Eight, Watch Your Mouth, Adverbs, and, with Maira Kalman, Why We Broke Up, which won the Michael J. Printz Honor. He also worked with Kalman on the books Girls Standing on Lawns, Hurry Up and Wait, and the recently released Weather Weather. Handler also edited The Best Nonrequired Reading of 2014, which includes an introduction by Lemony Snicket. As Lemony Snicket, he has written the best-selling series All The Wrong Questions as well as A Series of Unfortunate Events, which has sold more than 60 million copies, was the basis of a feature film starring Jim Carrey and Meryl Streep, with Jude Law as Lemony Snicket. Netflix is producing a new original series based on A Series of Unfortunate Events, featuring Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf, which premiered on Jan. 13, 2017. The gala will feature 19 outstanding authors, fabulous food and wine, and opportunities to purchase books and tickets to several exclusive Author Salons. Guests who purchase the popular Salons will have the future opportunity to mingle with guest authors over refreshments in an intimate setting. Funds raised will pay for programs and services that educate and inform children, youth and adults, enhancing the lives of residents throughout King County.
