The grandson of slaves rises to become Master of the King’s Chapel and the Kingdom of Portugal’s most celebrated musician…
Born in Rio de Janiero, José Mauricio Nuñes Garcia (1767-1830) overcame poverty and systemic racism to become one of Brazil’s most significant composers and conductors, serving the Portuguese Court in Rio and exerting a major influence on the musical landscape of his country. Acclaimed soprano Brenna Wells joins fortepianist Henry Lebedinsky (performing on an original 1799 square piano) to explore the music of Nuñes Garcia, the works of Mozart and Haydn that inspired him, and his role in the creation of the modinha, a unique Brazilian art song genre.
